I did some bartending when I was younger and ...

I did some bartending when I was younger and between regular jobs. It was a lot of fun but I do think to advance in this field you need to get extra training. What's the best type of course to take?

Smile  I feel the best schooling is behind the bar. School can't teach you what the customers can. My 30 years behind a bar taught me so much you would not believe. I love people, because they can teach a lot that we don't even realize.Mixing drinks is easy...it is the public , and patience we need trained on, and no school can do that.

I certified through a professional bartending school.  They not only train you to be prepared to take the front in any bar...they also have national placement.  I made my money back in the first week I worked, and then some.  For the jobs that run sheer volume...it's a very good idea.  The difference is that you know a couple of hundred drinks off the top of your head and can do exact pours, otherwise known as consistency and speed, something lacking from bartenders who learn from other bartenders, which is the norm.  

I decided to bartend in order to go back to school.  One problem for me was that I got spoiled.   It's easy to knock down better than 60k per year as a bartender and it's fun.  

If you want the top jobs and the best shifts where you'll make the most money, training is one way to get there.  It takes more than that to land the top slots, but if you have the training along with other qualities necessary for the job...you can't go wrong.  There really is one kind of training for bartenders...bartending school.  Aside from that, you can flair tend and it's fun but it's not for every bar, of course.
