Why does a bar appear with every site i visit ...

Why does a bar appear with every site i visit while in safari. It populates below the bookmark bar and I have to X out to close it out while in that particular tab. It never was there before. I use to be able X out of the site by hitting the red circle on the top left hand of the page and the prior page viewed would be under it. Help.
