Sue -- you are asking a very deep question which cannot be answered in a few words.  Some people have different views, but most Christians to my knowledge except this translation of it. 

 

The Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelations.  The name of the book gives away what the Book is about.  Revelations John saw while he was exciled.  In Rev. 15, he sees a woman dressed in white.  She symbolizes the belivers of Christ.  In Rev. 17 John sees a woman dressed as a harlot sitting on a beast.  This symbolizes the fallen church.  That is believed because in the Bible the church is referred to as "her". 

The Beast symbolizes a New World Order.  That includes the fallen Church, 666, the Beast and the AntiChrist.  Of course the Bible goes into a lot more than what I've written.

 

The Book of Revelations is awesome.  While some people fear it, those in Christ do not, (or should not) and it just brings you closer to God.
