My friend just had a baby girl, a sister for three brothers! As far as I know they didn't do anything special to try to ensure a girl, though that was what they wanted this time. If a couple do manipulate this process, isn't there a big chance they'll get off to a bad start with a baby of the opposite gender if it doesn't work?

You can't manipulate it.  The odds are 50/50 each and every time.

One day I said, 'I will go out & look for my enemies' and on that day I found no friends. The next day I said, 'I will go out & look for my friends' & on that day I found no enemies. ~YeddaHeads~
