Hi,
The price is after the 19th century artist, JMW Turner who is now considered to be as one of the greatest British artists.  The founders of the Turner Prize (The Tate Gallery's Patrons of New Art) aimed the Turner Price to encourage young promosing artists in beginning of their way.
