"Return Receipt" is a function of the mail client you would use. The mail clients offered by AOL (AOL Desktop Software and AOL Webmail (http://webmail.aol.com)) do not offer this when you compose a mail. But other mail clients like Outlook do. So you could set up those clients with AOL and retrieve your AOL mail via IMAP.

But be advised that "Return Receipts" only work if the client used by the recipients support this feature as well. So even if you use a client which will request this from the recipient it doesn't necessarily mean that you will get this reciept, since the recipient doesn't necessarily has to honor this request.

let me know when you find out - good question

AOL 9.1 and earlier support Return Receipts.
