When I have a problem I can't solve I sometimes look for a different fix. But first when you open AOL but haven't sign on, click on Connect Options -- If Broadband than click find broadband connections. Since I don't know what PC your using (XP or Win.7) It's hard to give exact details. If dial-up than check for that to get connected. 2nd thing to try that can work for different problems is - Start - control panel - Open user Account - Next create a new Administrator Account. See if this new Account will let you connect to AOL.
This second account can bypass a lot of problems sometimes.
