Discuss PGroot's answer to: Animals in the bible

Why is there no mention of the hippopotamus, elephant or giraffe in the bible. Did they not exist?

Elephants and giraffes were in Africa, not in the Middle East.  A giraffe was brought to Rome in 46 AD.  Hannibal brought elephants across the Alps in 218 BC.  So they were known in the Roman Empire.
