Has anyone been an addicted to alcohol and found ways to make sure they control themselves? What method is most effective and why do you feel that it is so effective?

I've got a few family members that have struggled with this. Some still have the problem and others were able to quit through AA. The AA meetings aren't a guarantee, it's something they have to address daily.
