Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin invented the Zeppelin airship. Zeppelin first conducted balloon trials while in the U.S. as a military observer during the 1860s. Zeppelin arrived at the idea for his flying machine after observing dirigible balloons in use during 1870-1871. The first successful trial of one of his airships took place on July 2, 1900.

To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.

This is a Wikipedia article about Zeppelin airship.
