mom2344's answer is for all motor vehicles; buses, trucks, etc.

So far this year, over 37,410,000 passenger cars have been manufactured.  By year's end, the total is estimated to be around 52 million.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

The answer not including special production models or light vans etc is 52,940,599 in 2008
