AIM Messenger: Connection Failed, but other AIM/AOL services work

A little over a day ago, my AIM messenger (version 6.5.8.1. which I have kept due to preferring it and it being the version pre-installed on my system) was working just fine. Today, upon attempting to sign in for the first time since then, I have encountered problems.

For starters, I attempted to sign into AIM at the same time I signed into my web mail. This always works fine, and is part of my usual routine. I got an alert about the authenticity of the certificate in my browser, however. I clicked to deny the connection, and it stopped loading mail altogether. (Screenshot: here)

At about the same time, AIM came back with a "connection failed" message. I thought it might be related, though I'm not sure how since I was using mail in Firefox which is not my default browser or anything of that sort. I reloaded mail, read the details of the certificate, and decided to accept it for the session. It allowed me to log into and use Mail as normal.

AIM messenger, however, still refuses to connect for either of my accounts (sorchadevilbear and sorchainfinity). AIM Express works with both, as does my AIM mail. I have logged out and back into my computer's account (it's Windows Vista) but not restarted. Still no improvement. I keep attempting to connect, and it keeps not working.

I also tried "Auto Configure" but it made no difference. It starts with Connecting, gets to Transferring, then comes up saying the connection  failed. I am not having any issues connecting to other AIM/AOL services or any other websites or programs that use the internet.

If it makes any difference, I have my screen names connected so that if I sign into sorchadevilbear, it also loads sorchainfinity and vice versa. I will be very upset if this can't be fixed without upgrading to the newer version of AIM because I don't wish to change from a program that normally works just fine. I have no alternate means of messaging aside from AIM Express, either, and I don't like to use that because I have a connection with limited bandwidth available.

If anyone knows what's going on or has any ideas of how to fix this, please help as soon as you can.

Are you still seeing this problem? What is the exact text of the error message you're seeing?

I apologize if I'm just being impatient, but it crossed my mind that perhaps you won't get alerted to the response unless it's posted as another answer. This is just a copy/paste of the comment made to the answer above, so no need to read both:

Hi, and my apologies for taking so long. I seem to always forget that watching a question here doesn't mean automatic email notifications. Oops!

Yes, I'm still seeing this problem. I attempt to log in with either of the accounts (which are linked) mentioned in the original post, and get an error. The same happens if I try a new account (childoftardis) created as the child of sorchadevilbear or another (ask.dna) created independently. I'll either select or type in my username, and it seems not to make a difference whether I choose "Remember Me". I input my password, always make sure it doesn't save my password or auto sign-in, then press Sign In.

It goes to Connecting then Transferring, then comes up saying "Connection failed. Try Auto Configure or change Settings manually." I have attempted to try the ports and servers which work with my third party client (Trillian) as well as my friend's (iChat), but they don't seem to work. Auto Configure merely re-selects the settings which aren't working. (kdc.uas.aol.com on port 443). Here is a screenshot of the error, in case it helps: http://i.imgur.com/KyFES.png

I have also attempted pressing "reset" under "auto configure" in settings, restarting the client several times, and even rebooting my system. Nothing seems to fix it.

Sites such as downforeveryone.com and downornot.com report that kdc.uas.aol.com is down, but I don't know if that's accurate or some kind of feature where that server cannot be accessed by a browser. But like I said, I've tried other servers and ports which work on my system and my friend's with AIM via third party clients, but those seem not to work with AIM 6.

Thanks for responding, and again my apologies for taking so long to get back to you.

Are you connecting from behind a firewall - or using a Proxy server?  What about if you try using AIM 7.5?

Yes to the firewall, but it remains the same as always and hasn't been changed between the time AIM 6 was working and the time it stopped working. I do believe the ISP uses a proxy, as it's satellite internet, but as far as I know there's no way to alter that because it's on their end. I also don't know of anything being changed at the router or modem level, so I don't think anything has changed on my end.

Unfortunately, however, AIM 6 still refuses to work and I can't install any new software on my computer at this time due to hardware issues. Otherwise, I would check to see if it can work with AIM 7.5

Edited to add: You know, now that I think about it, the satellite internet provider uses dynamic/changing IP addresses. Or, at least, I think it does. Is it possible that there's something going on at that level to keep me from connecting to the kdc.uas.aol.com server? I remember trying it in my browser with one of those free online proxies and it brought up a request for username and password. (Note that I did not input anything there, for security reasons.) When I try just going to the server's address in the browser it doesn't work and gives a Failure To Connect To Web Server error.

Are you able to connect through a web browser at aim.com or aimexpress.com?

When I attempt aim.com I can load the main page. However, clicking Sign In gives me the error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /_cqr/login on this server. I have been using aimexpress.com off and on since this problem arose, and it connects just fine.

Can you try going to aol.com and signing in (if you aren't already) - then sign out and go back to visit aim.com?

That fixed aim.com, and after I signed in with my usual credentials it made me confirm name and email address.

It took a while to actually log in after clicking "Looks Good" but eventually brought up a page asking me who to start chatting with. Just to test it, since I was already logged in in the background on Trillian, I attempted to message one of my other screennames. That didn't quite work, as it mentioned sending a New Aim invite. Even though I tried once with just the screenname (sorchainfinity) and again with the @aim.com email address, I never did get any sort of invite or IM notification. So I'm not really sure if it actually logged me in or otherwise worked. (But it did have the right icon image!)

AIM 6 is still not working, unfortunately.

AOL Mail service cutting out

It isn't always AOL's fault. If you are on dialup, you could get your connection interrupted by Call Waiting. Or it could be a noisy phone line; if you have static or crackling when you make a phone call, that will interfere with dialup or DSL.
