Accessing a joystick on a PS/2 sound card game port

joystick ibm ps/2

Hi, I have an old IBM PS/2 computer that I want to use with a joystick and read the x,y values into a basic program.

I can get a sound card (does it have to be PS/2 specific?). How would a basic program access the sound card's game port? There is a basic instruction to read a joystick, but how does the computer know where to find the sound card and then what address to access to get the coordinates? Many Thanks!!
