It's not "abnormal" as much as it is a sign of some social anxiety.  It's that way for a lot of people who aren't gay, as well.  A friend is someone who knows all about you and likes you anyway, and you won't know who your friends really are if you don't take a chance and put yourself out there.  People will disappoint you sometimes, but mostly the good outweighs the bad in life.
