The official explanation is that a double sun is a mirage, caused by refraction of the sun's light so that it appears to be in 2 places.  Such an event is rare but not unheard-of.  There was a book published in 1993 about such things.  It is not a nova or anything happening to the sun.  The story about Betelgeuse going nova "soon" or 2012 was a mistake; soon might be in the next 10,000 years, which is short in the lifetime of a star.

I am unaware of any unusual conditions in the sun of late.  All seems to be as usual, and will doubtless continue for the foreseeable future.  The sun is heating up a bit as time goes on, which explains our variable weather, but that is nothing to worry over.

We learn from history that we learn nothing from history: those who refuse to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

I remember my father has told about 3 suns while sunset. It happens winter 1944/45 in Siberia, Russia. The explanation was, the sun had a wide corona caused by refractions with a layer of cold air. This corona was invisible but caused at the horizon a bright shiny spot. It looked like the original sun in the middle became escorted by two brother suns. If this scenario would happens after the original sun were set, it still could show the two bright spots at the horizon.

There is no better guide through darkness then your own balance

How can you stay safe in the sun?

Select an appropriate sunscreen. Check your sunscreens SPF. The SPF, or "sun protection factor" number, contrary to popular belief, does not signify how strong the SPF is.
