1/5th of 10 is 2. So, you have 8 left.

If you are a visual or kinesthetic learner (it is easier for you to remember and/or understand if you see or touch, instead of listen) then do the following: Get ten things (toothpicks, cupcakes, pennies - it doesn't matter) and lay them out on the table in front of you.

Then play with them until you have arranged the items into five equal groups. Notice how many items in each group - as you know from the other answers, there should be 2 items in each.

Multiplication is a short-cut way of adding.

Instead of saying 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2, we say 2 x 5.

If you have already learned multiplication, remember that division is sort of a way to check your multiplication answers. So if you already know that 2 x 5 = 10; you also know that 10 divided by 5 = 2! (And that means that 1/5 of 10 is ONE group of the FIVE groups that you made with your TEN items.)

You can use this method for other simple division and fraction problems, too.

10 divided by 2 is 5. Therefore 1/5 is equal to 2/10. Now try and answer the question again!

Very good answer and very cute how you took the time to really explain it. I could not have done better myself

The easiest way to remember how to do this problem and any problem like it is to remember that when you are dealing with fractions and you have a whole number like in this scenario the whole number is always over 1...10/1 x 1/5 = 10/5 = 2..so 1/5 of 10 is 2. This means that 2 cupcakes were eaten so there are 8 left.
