Sometimes its because the sunlight doesnt quite get to that area, and it will soften and sometimes rot from that. Tomatoes need lots of sunlight!

Since they are conditioned for dry sandy soil, they might not root in water, but it wouldnt hurt to give it a try. Be careful though, they are extremely poisoness, you should wear gloves.
