If it's the episode that I think it is, the song is "Moody's Mood For Love" sung by Eddie Jefferson. Cliff and his friend are "playing" in the basement while the wives do whatever.

I think the music you're describing would generally fall into the categories of cool jazz, maybe a little hard bop, and post-bop (with Keith Jarrett veering off into the avant-garde).
