Don't know if you like golden colors (not metallic), but there are dozens of shades that might look great with your red drapes.

You can buy storage cabinets from Home Depot or Lowe's for the 1 available wall, then put some kind of top across them. That should give you lots of room to sew with storage too.

Since you are in an apartment, I would sand them down and paint them. (I wouldn't make a big investment in a rental.)
